The myth persists. Even in our modern world, countless people believe that without God, one's life has no purpose or meaning - that the lives of atheists are devoid of joy and happiness because they are not religious.
Starting out as one of the highest-grossing publishing projects on Kickstarter, A Better Life highlights the various ways that those who are not religious find joy, meaning, and purpose in life. Chris Johnson spent two years traveling the world speaking with and photographing atheists from all walks of life to create this hardcover photography book.

I have spent my entire life (well at least since age 9 when I discovered that god was just a made-up fairly tale like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny), being cajoled by believers who would ask how I could possibly live my life without a purpose, without meaning, being told that my whole life was pointless and meaningless without an Invisible Sky Daddy who would grant me an eternity of boredom in Disney Heaven if I would only believe in him, or, if I didn't believe in him, he would throw a temper tantrum and torture me for infinity. It is so refreshing and positively affirming to have a book like this, filled with other people, who like me, have a positive outlook on this life, here and now, on this earth, and find meaning and beauty every day, all around us. Chris Johnson is not only a wonderful photographer who knows how to capture images that fill us with inspiration and awe, but he also knows how to talk to people so as to flesh out their words and thoughts which demonstrate that we don't need ancient magic fairy tales filled with empty promises or fearful threats. Beauty, purpose, wonder, love, meaning are right here, right now, all around us.

Thoughtful essays and great photos.
The essays from famous and not-so-famous atheists are thoughtful, sometimes poignant, and at times thought-provoking. I especially liked Penn Jilette's. And Teller even speaks -- well, he writes.
The essays are "preaching to the choir," as it were. I doubt that they will change any minds, and I'm sure that's not the intent.
I was impressed with the photos as well. Portraits and scenic shots show a talent and capture the essence of the subjects.
So glad I have this book.
This book, through its stunning photography –– typically of the participants in their natural environments, and often with their loved ones –– has crushed the myth that atheists are dark, hopeless individuals with a lack of appreciation for the world around them or the life they've been given. The life stories of the individuals, both well-known and everyday citizens, speak of the joy we should seek from the life we have here and now. Better still, they do so without taking pot-shots at the religions they've said goodbye to.
A must for every coffee table, and a great pick-me-up for those days when you just need a reminder of what life's all about.
Like so many others, I find the book just gorgeous to look through. And the diversity of the people is what really struck me when I first got my copy. So many different people, finding inspiration in so many different parts of life. They remind me that there is so much in the world to celebrate and to devote myself to that can help and heal and give hope. They are a mere drop in the bucket of a much broader secular community. I hope their willingness to speak out openly and publicly about themselves, their feelings, and their lives, will help dispel some of the misconceptions and prejudices against atheists that continue to persist in many parts of the globe.
fabulous book...should be read by all...especially the bible quoting haters of the world
Chris brings home the faces of beautiful people who also happen to believe differently than "mainstream" America. The book itself is well done and the printing is superb.
Great to read many different people who enjoy life without the need for a deity. This book is absolute proof that religion is not needed for happiness, and such a beacon of reality that comes with learning to think for yourself.
Lovely coffee table book. You can pick it up and read as many interviews as you have time for, then place it back on the table to read again tomorrow. Interesting and inspiring. A joy to read and great photos.
